David's racing interest stemmed from wanting to improve the riding
skills already in practice on the street. He started life by doing a
track day, reading up on the skills needed for racing, then went
headlong by buying an obsolete race bike. This format was because the
initial cost of the bike, a 1990 Honda Hawk, allowed for purchase of a
trailer, generator, tire warmers, and many sets of tires for the same
cost if he would have bought a new machine and had to convert it over to
track ready condition.
Next up was completing the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing
Association (WMRRA, http://www.wmrra.com/) new racer requirements of
attending the classroom session to cover bike preparation and general
track rules, follow the leader sessions with race mentors to learn the
lines around the track, completing three corner-worker days, and
completing six novice race heats in a row. This process started in
2004, and did not finish until 2006
